Heading back-to-school is always exciting. For both parents and children, it’s preparing for a new year of possibilities, activities and achievements. You’ve heard the adage, “If we have our health, we have everything,” – that’s also true for kiddos. To optimize their potential, you’ll want to ensure that they have the proper nutrition to stay healthy to meet the challenges of a new school year.

In our modern world of processed food, fertilized produce and handy fast food diners, it’s a good bet that kids don’t get all the nutrients they need. Nutritional supplements can shore up any nutrients your child may lack for good immunity or provide targeted nutrition to enhance even the healthiest diet. Here are the essentials:

Give your child foundational nutrition with a good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement. Kirkman® offers many options in multi-vitamins and in a variety of forms (liquids, capsules, tablets, chewables and powders). See our entire line of multivitamins on the Kirkman website.

For younger children, who may have trouble swallowing capsules try a chewable. Kids’s love the mango peach flavor of Kirkman’s childrens’ chewables: Children’s Chewable Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Wafers (#0288-120)Children’s Chewable Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Wafers with Xylitol (#0379-120) and Children’s Chewable Multi-Vitamin/Mineral Wafer with 5-MTHF(#0467-120.

Thera Response (#0300-180) has been parents’ favorite pick for teenagers. It’s a very comprehensive formulation with nutrients to help kids through challenging growth years. It also includes a small amount of lithium to support mental health. Other great multi-vitamins for teenagers include Spectrum Complete Capsules – Hypoallergenic (#0462-300),and EveryDay™ Multi-Vitamin Capsules – Hypoallergenic (#0054-125, #0054-250).

For special needs kids Kirkman® developed our proprietary Super Nu-Thera® and Nu-Thera® product lines with the late Dr. Bernard Rimland. Super Nu-Thera® products contain vitamin B-6 and magnesium with higher potencies than in the Nu-Thera® line. Dr. Rimland’s research indicated that some special needs kids were better supported with the particular nutrients that are incorporated in the Super Nu-Thera® and Nu-Thera® lines. This line is extensive so please see the entire lineon Kirkman’s website to make your choice.

When kiddos rejoin their classmates, they become susceptible to whatever “bug” may be circulating among the herd. Immuno-Aid™ Advanced Formula hypoallergenic capsules (#0426-120)provide broad spectrum immune support with special natural ingredients known to boost immunity.

Remember that 80% of your child’s immune system resides in his or her gut. Taking a good, daily probiotic that populates the gut with beneficial bacteria ensures added immunity and healthy digestion. Try Kirkman’s proprietary probiotics, Pro-Bio Gold® (#0442-060 and #0442-120) and Super Pro-Bio™ 75 Billion – Bio-Max Series – Hypoallergenic (#0345-060)

Kirkman® offers an extensive line of immune support products for different types of immunity needs. See our full line of immune support products and probiotic products on Kirkman’s website.

Calcium usually gets credit for strengthening bones and teeth but it needs magnesium and vitamin D to be most effective. Magnesium controls the transport of calcium across cell membranes. Magnesium also remains in the bones to give them strength. Kirkman® offers a wide variety of calcium and magnesium supplements in various forms including capsules, tablets, liquids, chewables and powders. See Kirkman’s full line of calcium and magnesium supplements on Kirkman’s website. It includes:

Vitamin D is essential for the body’s ability to absorb calcium. A lack of Vitamin D can also cause childhood rickets. This nutrient is important for bone and skeletal health, as well as building strong teeth. Numerous studies have concluded that the problem of low vitamin D levels in both adults and children is widespread. According to some studies, even people who live in sunny climates may not get enough vitamin D.

In November 2010, the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) expert committee set a new “dietary reference intake” for vitamin D as follows:

Infants age 0 to 6 months: adequate intake, 400 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 1,000 IU/day Infants age 6 to 12 months: adequate intake, 400 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 1,500 IU/day Age 1-3 years: adequate intake, 600 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 2,500 IU/day Age 4-8 years: adequate intake, 600 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 3,000 IU/day Age 9-70: adequate intake, 600 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 4,000 IU/day Age 71+ years: adequate intake, 800 IU/day; maximum safe upper level of intake**, 4,000 IU/day

**The IOM’s upper limit is not a recommended intake, but what the IOM considers the highest safe level.

Kirkman® offers vitamin D-3 supplements in strengths of 400 IU (#0378-120), 1,000 IU (#0428-090), 2,000 IU (#0422-120) and 4,000 IU (#0434-120) in hypoallergenic capsules and 1,000 IU chewable tablets (#0428-090).
