Every day seems to bring us a new story of environmental contamination and how it’s affecting us. Here are just a few recent headlines:

  • Just last month, the Animas river in Colorado was dyed a potentially toxic yellow after the Environmental Protection Agency mistakenly released more than a million gallons of contaminated water.
  • There’s a constant stream of articles about how the world’s bee population, our business food producers, is being wiped out by a new form of pesticides called neonicotinoids.
  • And in paradise, Hawaii, birth defects have spiked along with a corresponding increase in pesticide use.
  • Environmental contaminants can work their way into everything we consume. Fish can be full of mercury that originated in coal plants hundreds of miles away, pesticide residues remain on fruits long after they’ve been washed, our drinking water can absorb toxins from the air, from mining and from pesticide run-off.

Kirkman® made an early decision to invest in safeguarding our customers from the ubiquitous presence of contaminants and now Kirkman’s purity testing protocol is the most comprehensive in the nutraceutical industry.

In 2011, Kirkman® adopted the Ultra Tested® protocol to test for more than 950 environmental contaminants in every ingredient it uses in its products (except lotions, creams and oils).  These contaminants include pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, biocides, endocrine disruptors and other potentially harmful chemicals.  No other nutritional supplement company even comes close to this degree of purity testing.

The Testing Procedure

Kirkman’s Ultra Tested® testing protocol is performed at a state-of-the-art environmental laboratory. First, raw ingredients are tested for pathogens.  Chemical analyses are performed to determine the presence of any of bacteria, viruses, molds or fungi.

Next, the ingredients are tested for hundreds of contaminants using the latest technology in gas chromatography mass spectrometry (mass spec).

The next step is for the raw ingredients to be tested for heavy metals. This is done using a (state-of-the-art, inductively coupled plasma mass spec instrument. Most companies comply with the FDA’s recommended tests for four heavy metals (mercury, arsenic, lead and cadmium).  Kirkman® tests for 24 heavy metals which is far more extensive that regulations require.

The products are then analyzed using a high-pressure liquid chromatography instrument.The purpose of this step is to determine whether the nutrient quantities of the finished products match what will be listed on the label.

A chemical analysis is then performed to verify the absence of the common allergens gluten, milk, whey, casein, peanuts, soy and egg.

In addition, finished products are also subjected to the rigorous Ultra Tested protocol.

If any contaminants are found, Kirkman® rejects the ingredient or product.

On an ongoing basis, products are tested for stability where they are again analyzed using the high-pressure liquid chromatography instrument to determine that the products’ potencies remain at expected levels.

Ultra Tested® is an involved process that Kirkman® undertakes to deliver supplements that are purity tested to the highest industry standards.
